Objective Performance Evaluations

AI can enable more objective performance evaluations in several key ways:

  • Firstly, AI can analyse vast amounts of data from multiple sources to provide a fuller and more unbiased picture of an individual’s performance. This moves away from relying on potentially subjective observations or limited snapshots of work. For instance, AI can collect data from internal metrics, feedback, and communication patterns.
  • Secondly, AI can help in reducing the risk of recency bias. Traditional performance evaluations can be skewed by more recent events, whether positive or negative. AI systems can easily refer to historical employee performance data, ensuring that the entire review period is considered. As one systems supplier noted, “Managers are not going to miss those things that might have been captured already or captured six months ago because it’s all there for them”.

AI can also facilitate the establishment of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals by considering not just company objectives but also global business trends and industry benchmarks, thanks to its expansive data processing capabilities.

Continuous feedback systems, often enhanced by AI, contribute to objectivity by distilling performance data into actionable insights and providing a near-real-time reflection of performance data. This allows for more timely and data-backed discussions about performance. Additionally, intuitive, judgment-free data visualisations* empowered by AI can enable employees to self-reflect on their performance more objectively.

AI’s role in performance management is also to tailor feedback to the individual, which can enhance their performance potential based on objective data points. Tools can automate the process of analysis, interpretation, and suggestion related to performance. Finally, AI tools are designed to deliver clear, actionable, and unbiased feedback by eliminating stereotypes and subjective language and anchoring feedback to company values, behaviours, and role-specific skills. This promotes a culture of fairness and trust, as employees can act on feedback they believe is objective.
