In the previous module, we talked about the need for managers to control the resources at their disposal. The problem with people is that they cannot be controlled in the same way as inanimate resources. And if you seek to impose too much control over them then they may react by pushing back and resenting what you are trying to do.
In the 20th century, with increasing automation in industry, there was a tendency to try to apply the same management methods to people as to other resources.
More recently, there has a been a backlash against this, and a recognition that staff need to be led and positively influenced to deliver the behaviours that result in maximum benefits to the organisation and their clients, and cannot be coerced.
