AI is a powerful and innovative technology which can deliver significant benefits.
Therefore, in our view, developers of online learning programme should:
- Make use of AI to generate interesting and engaging course material
- Seek to expose learners to the capabilities and pitfalls of AI
- Encourage learners to question and evaluate all the material, whether generated by humans alone or with the help of AI
- Include content to help learners harness AI and understand its implications for the topic under consideration.
However,
- AI is not self-aware
- AI has no understanding of whether the content generated is accurate or valid, and
- AI has no concept of the limits of its own understanding and expertise.
Therefore, all AI-generated content should only be included after scrutiny by a human expert, and in many cases, will require significant experimentation by the (human) course developer in order to formulate the correct questions to ask the AI.
Material should be transparent and indicate clearly where AI has been used.
