AI in Online Learning: A New Era for Education?

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming many sectors, and education is no exception. Online learning, already a significant force in modern education, is being disrupted by AI, creating personalised, adaptive, and engaging learning experiences. This blog post explores recent academic work on the impact of AI in online learning, highlighting the potential benefits and challenges.

One of the most significant impacts of AI in online learning is the ability to personalise learning experiences for individual students. AI-powered platforms can analyse student data, such as learning styles, strengths, weaknesses, and progress, to tailor content, pacing, and assessments. This personalized approach can lead to improved learning outcomes, increased student engagement, and greater motivation.

Ellikkal, A. and Rajamohan, S. (2024), found a significant, positive influence of AI- AI-directed personalised learning on students’ fundamental psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness, thereby fostering engagement. Autonomy emerged as a key driver of engagement, which was strongly associated with improved academic performance. AI is also enabling the development of adaptive learning systems that can adjust the difficulty and content of learning materials based on student performance. These systems can provide real-time feedback and support, helping students to master concepts at their own pace.

Strielkowski et al (2024) argue that empirical evidence supports the claim that adaptive learning technologies significantly improve educational efficiency. They cite García-Martínez et al. (2023), who reviewed 25 studies on adaptive learning technologies and concluded that these technologies consistently enhance student engagement and performance across various educational contexts. They also highlight a range of challenges and barriers:

  • Resistance to change from educators;
  • Bias in educational tools that disadvantage certain student groups
  • Cultural preference for teacher-led learning
  • Over-reliance of students on technology
  • Cost of implementation and maintenance

Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) are another application of AI in online learning. ITS can provide personalised instruction and feedback to students, simulating the experience of having a human tutor. Studies have found that students who used an ITS performed better on standardised tests compared to students who received traditional classroom instruction.

AI can also be used to create more engaging and interactive online learning experiences. AI-powered chatbots can answer student questions, provide feedback, and offer support, while virtual reality and augmented reality technologies can create immersive learning environments.

In a review, Korda et al (2024) found that AI chatbots have positively impacted education by offering personalised assistance, 24/7 availability, rapid feedback on assignments, and efficient handling of administrative tasks.

They found that AI chatbots are changing education by providing personalised assistance, 24/7 availability, and automated administrative support.  Studies show improvements in assignment completion rates and reductions in administrative workload. However, challenges include potential biases, privacy concerns, and limitations in understanding complex or nuanced queries.  Additionally, over-reliance on chatbots could hinder critical thinking skills and human interaction.  Institutions must address these issues through data protection measures, bias audits, and a balanced approach to technology integration, ensuring equitable access and promoting human connection alongside AI assistance. Another challenge is the need to ensure that AI is used in a way that respects student privacy and data security. Additionally, it is important to consider the potential impact of AI on the role of teachers and the future of education.

Despite these challenges, the future of AI in online learning is bright. As AI technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more innovative applications that transform the way students learn. AI has the potential to make online learning more personalised, adaptive, engaging, and effective, ultimately leading to improved learning outcomes for all students.
